Yokohama F. Marinos: Shanghai Odyssey Episode III – Can History Repeat Itself?

Who would have thought that Yokohama F. Marinos and a team from Shanghai, China, would be locking horns for the third time in such a short span?

What might seem like a logistical nightmare for some could actually be a breath of fresh air for Marinos, who have been struggling to find their footing in domestic competitions. As the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 Round of 16 looms, all eyes are on the first leg between Shanghai Port FC and Yokohama F. Marinos, set to take place at the SAIC Motor Pudong Arena on Tuesday, 4th March 2025.

A Return to the Scene of Their Last Triumph

Let’s rewind to mid-February, when Yokohama F. Marinos last tasted victory. It was in Shanghai, where they secured a hard-fought 2-0 win against Shanghai Port FC. While the first half was laboured, Marinos managed to grind out a result, thanks to their resilience and tactical nous. Since then, however, the Japanese side has endured a frustrating run of form. Defeat to Sanfrecce Hiroshima was followed by disappointing draws against Kanagawa rivals Yokohama FC and Shonan Bellmare. No wins. No triumph on Japanese home soil.

It’s enough to make even the most ardent Marinos fan question their resolve to sit through a full 90 minutes of football. (And let’s be honest, watching Marinos at the minute might make you wonder how long a soccer match really is – it can feel like an eternity when your team isn’t firing on all cylinders.)

But here’s the twist: returning to Shanghai might not be such a bad thing for Marinos. After all, it’s the city where they last celebrated a victory. The question is, can they replicate that success?

Shanghai Port FC: A Team on the Rise

Since their loss to Marinos, Shanghai Port FC have been on an upward trajectory. Under the guidance of former Marinos manager, Kevin Muscat, the current Chinese Super League (CSL) champions have strung together consecutive wins in the domestic league. Muscat, who famously led Yokohama F. Marinos to the J1 League title in 2022, has brought his trademark intensity and tactical acumen to Shanghai.

His affinity for Brazilian players is well-documented – during his time at Marinos, he worked with the likes of Anderson Lopes, Marcos Junior, and Elber. Now, he’s harnessing the talents of Gustavo and Leonardo, who have been instrumental in Shanghai Port’s recent successes.

Gustavo, in particular, has been in scintillating form, netting a brace in their recent victory over Peng City. Leonardo, meanwhile, has been seamlessly integrated into the team, showcasing the kind of synergy with Gustavo that Muscat’s sides are known for.

As Muscat himself noted in a post-match press conference after their 2-0 win over Changchun Yatai: “I’m very satisfied with the team’s overall performance today! We carried over the momentum from the first round, controlled the game, and attacked with purpose. For an offensive team like ours, preventing counterattacks is crucial. If we can execute our attacks well, it takes pressure off the defence. Today, we played with patience, and you can see the growing understanding between Leonardo and Gustavo. They’ve worked hard and contributed immensely to the team.”

Muscat also took a moment to thank the fans, whose unwavering support has been a driving force for the team. “I want to take this opportunity to thank our fans,” he said. “Their passion and encouragement from the first minute to the last have been incredible. Thank you to all of them!”

The Fourth Encounter: A Tale of Two Cities

This upcoming match marks the fourth meeting between Yokohama F. Marinos and Shanghai Port FC. Interestingly, Shanghai has been a happy hunting ground for Marinos, with two of their three previous encounters ending in victory. The most recent, of course, was last month’s 2-0 win. Before that, there was the 2020 clash, which, despite being designated as a Shanghai Port “home” game, was held in Qatar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Marinos emerged victorious in that match as well, though Shanghai Port would go on to win the reverse fixture, also held in Al Wakrah, Qatar.

This time, however, the stakes are even higher. This isn’t just another group stage match; it’s the Round of 16 in the AFC Champions League Elite™. While it’s not the gold medal soccer match (let’s not get carried away), it’s a crucial tie that could define the trajectory of both teams’ seasons.

Preview: A Clash of Styles and Ambitions

Shanghai Port FC will be hoping to turn the tide when they host Yokohama F. Marinos on Tuesday. The Chinese Super League champions are in fine form, having kicked off their title defence with two consecutive wins. However, their defensive frailties – they conceded 18 goals in the League Stage – remain a concern. If they are to advance, they’ll need to be more resolute at the back.

On the other hand, Yokohama F. Marinos, will be looking to extend their continental winning streak to six matches – the longest in the competition’s history for the club.

Despite their domestic struggles, Marinos have been a force to be reckoned with in the AFC Champions League Elite™. Their opening 7-3 defeat to Gwangju FC seems like a distant memory now, as they’ve since found their rhythm on the continental stage.

However, their recent 1-1 draw with Shonan Bellmare in the J1 League serves as a reminder that they can’t afford to take anything for granted. The match in Shanghai will be a test of their mettle, their tactical flexibility, and their ability to rise to the occasion.

頑張れ、マリノス!(Ganbare, Marinos! – Let’s go, Marinos!)
