Maya Le Tissier has been appointed as the new captain of Manchester United’s women’s team, marking a significant milestone in the young defender’s burgeoning career. The 22-year-old England international takes over the captaincy from Katie Zelem, who recently departed the club to join Angel City in the United States.
Le Tissier, who hails from Guernsey, has been a pivotal figure for Manchester United since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022. Her impact was immediate, as she scored two goals on her debut for the Red Devils in a commanding victory against Reading.
Since then, she has made over 40 league appearances, becoming a mainstay in United’s defense.
In her first season with the club, Le Tissier’s performances earned her recognition as she was voted Manchester United’s joint-Players’ Player of the Year, sharing the accolade with teammate Ella Toone, who has now been appointed vice-captain.
Upon being named captain, Le Tissier expressed her pride and commitment to leading the team. “It’s an honour to be named captain of this great football club and I will wear the armband with real pride, to help drive this team to success on and off the field,” she told the club’s official website.
This new leadership role comes at a crucial time for Le Tissier, who has struggled to break into Sarina Wiegman’s England squad, having made just four senior appearances for the national team. However, the added responsibility of captaining one of the Women’s Super League’s top teams could bolster her chances of securing a more regular spot in the England lineup as she continues to develop both as a player and a leader.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Le Tissier to see how she handles the captaincy and whether it can serve as a springboard for her international ambitions.
